How to start reading if you are a non-reader

You might have thought, “It’s not my cup of tea!” earlier.

Though You were not into reading, now you desire friendship with books and wish to start reading as your hobby or simply to have fun or want to use your leisure time. Remember it’s never too late to start a journey until you breathe. And the journey of reading books is truly beautiful.

A non-reader May face problems in the beginning due to lack of guidance , there could be various reasons such as a person may choose a heavy book to read in the start or they choose a book which contradicts his/her interest. Starting with a good book which will hold your interest is equally important.

Nothing to worry! In this article, I will be guiding you with some captivating tricks to start your reading journey.

“Books are a uniquely portable magic.” – Stephen King

#1 Find your genre: Are you serious about it? If YES, then you have crossed half a mile already.

The first thing you have to do is find your genre. Genre is nothing but a category of a book. Such as Non-fiction : Biography, Autobiography, Self help etc. And Fiction : Historic fiction, Contemporary(Rom-Com), Realistic fiction, Fantasy, Thriller etc.

Your interest shows in which genre you fit in. If you like magic, spells, characters having special powers, you can go with a fantasy book. If you are interested in history, you can choose any historical fiction book. If you like love stories, go with contemporary. I will not highly recommend you but if you want to set out with Non-fiction, then I will suggest you pick a biography or an autobiography of your favourite personality. So that you will not get humdrum.

#2 Choose the right book:  Second step includes choosing the right book for you. Now you know what your interest is. Suppose you choose to read a biography of your favourite personality(any leader, scientist, actor, other), make sure you choose a book having less than 150 pages. Picking a heavy book in the start is an absolute boner.

#3 Make a daily target : You can read as many pages as you want. There is no rule. If you want, you can finish a book in one day. But if you struggle to sit in one place and read continuously, I will suggest you read only 2 pages in a day. After 3 days make it 4 pages in a day and gradually increase the no. of pages after every 3 days. Add this in your routine.

#4 Get your corner: when you are reading, make sure you are not getting disturbed by your surroundings. You may have to sit in a silent place with all your gadgets away. Make a habit to sit at a clean and same place daily. Again there is no rule, you can choose any corner in your house or patio and start reading.

#5 Take a break: It is necessary to take a break after every 45 min for at least 10 mins. Have some water or your favorite beverages. Take a walk around then come and sit again in the same place. Our mind and body need to get relaxed. So don’t force yourself.

#6 Extra: There are some extra things which I mostly add in my reading habit. If you wish you can also add those things to increase your interest and more pleasure in reading. First thing- Lit a scented candle in your room. Second- Play instrumental music in the background with low volume. Third thing- Have a reader friend, discuss with him/her about a book that you are currently reading.
